**The Ocean Cleanup** is probably the best-known non-profit organization dedicated to plastic collection on the open ocean and – meanwhile – on rivers. The organization itself, its progress, its founder, Boyan Slat, and their history are described and documented in countless online articles and videos.
Over the last few years they have developed two systems: With Barrier 001/B, now the result of multiple redesigns, The Ocean Cleanup was able to collect plastic in the open ocean for the first time a few months ago. The interceptors ensure that no more plastic flows into the oceans at defined points in rivers – primarily Asian ones.
The information provided by The Ocean Plastic on its FAQ website is also very informative, especially on the subject of plastic recycling.
